Utrecht’s plans to realise a new station area are necessary in order to cope with the steadily increasing number of people making use of the city centre. Fact is that Utrecht is growing, the city is thriving and the area around the Central Station must be prepared for the future. The first piles have been driven.
No changes will be made to the historic city centre, and the Station Area will form a natural extension of the unique central district. This will effectively bring together the areas to the east and west of the railway tracks.
Towards an upgraded Station Area Utrecht
Utrecht central station will be replaced by a modern public transport terminal, large enough to handle the growing number of travellers. Hoog Catharijne shopping centre will undergo extensive modernisation. A new library will arise, and the old music centre will be replaced by a Music Palace.
The Jaarbeurskant, the westside, of the tracks will house a new casino, a mega-cinema complex and a hotel. And last but not least: water will once again flow in the Catharijnesingel canal.
