Library ++
Developer: City of Utrecht
Status: Vision
Architect: Rapp + Rapp
A new library++ will be built at the Smakkelaarsveld: not just a library, but a place for information, deepening, relaxation and meetings. The challenge is to develop a building which appeals to one’s imagination! Would you like to watch a movie, visit a debate, surf the internet, borrow books, CDs or art, play a computer game, have lunch or drink a cup of coffee? From the end of 2015 library++ will be the place to do all this! In addition to The Central Library, the Art Library and Artplex the building will also feature apartments. The Utrecht Arts Centre (UCK) may also be added. The building will be located right next to the Utrecht Central Station. At this key traffic hub, the High-quality Public Transport lane and possibly the new tram track will literally pass underneath the new development.
The building in facts and figures
Total floor space: (gross) 45,000 m2 Residences: approx. 27,000 m2 (approx. 120 owner-occupied apartments) Library: (public services, offices etc.) approx. 15,000 m2 Artplex: (film-related entertainment, offices including Dutch Film Festival) approx. 4,000 m2 Parking spots for apartments owners + staff: approx. 260 cars Bicycle parking: approx. 600 bicycles We hope that the Utrecht Arts Centre (UCK) with a floor space of approximately 5,500 m2 will also become part of the library++. The feasibility is still being examined.
The Location
The library++ will be located at the Smakkelaarsveld. This location, right next to the railway tracks, is a prominent and unique place within the Station area and forms 'a gateway to the old city'. The Smakkelaarsveld will be a lively, green and open space on the water, where you will be able to relax and enjoy yourself. The water along the Smakkelaarsveld, the Leidsche Rijn, will be connected to the restored Catharijnesingel. From the terrace on the water you will be able to see small boats going towards the city centre or Munt. The architect
The level of ambition of the library++ is high. The new building must be a prominent landmark in the Station area. Like the new Music Palace. The intention therefore is that the two buildings will be perceived as belonging together. This requires a building that appeals to the imagination. The selection of the right architect is therefore an important step in the preparation of the new development. The next step is the design process.
