Location Jaarbeursplein

Since 2018, the Jaarbeursplein has grown more than twice in size and has been made suitable for manifestations and events. The large pond can be covered and serve as a stage. And if you stand at the bottom of the huge staircase, with the slight curve in the middle, in front of the station, and you speak to the people on the stairs, everyone can hear you. It is actually a modern amphitheatre!

In the past, in the right corner of the square near the Beatrix building and the station, stood a statue of a huge mask that seems to be torn by two hands. It is a real 'theatre image', which represents an actor who steps out of his role after the performance and becomes himself again. The statue is called 'Demasqué', and artist PéPé Grégoire made it. When you hear the name Demasqué, you immediately think of the musical The Phantom of the Opera, which was performed here in the theatre. In the musical, large, masked balls are given, and The Phantom himself always had a mask on. In those years, the musical attracted visitors from all over the Netherlands. Producer Joop van den Ende unveiled the statue in 1999 on the Jaarbeursplein, to honour the success of his musical. The statue was moved in 2015 and can now be found near the musical theatre in Scheveningen. So again, an appropriate location! In the meantime, you can find other old familiar and new art around Jaarbeursplein. For example ‘the rebus’. You can find this artwork on the facade of the Beatrix building on the side of the station. Have you seen it already?
