Vredenburg junction
Developer: City of Utrecht
Constructor: Heijmans
Status: Preliminary design
In addition to the restored Catharijnecanal there will be a number of new crossings. Bridges will be built near the Knipstraat and the Mariaplaats. The covered Hoog Catharijne crossing will be replaced by a new one. At the point where the Leidsche Rijn and the Catharijnesingel will meet, a system of bridges will be developed that has been given the working title of the Vredenburg junction.
The Vredenburg will in the future be connected again to the restored Catharijnesingel canal and will via a new junction run to the Smakkelaarsveld and the Public Transport Terminal. The route from the Smakkelaarsveld via the Catharijnesingel to Vredenburg is one of the busiest junctions in the city centre. Every day, more than 22,000 cyclists and 2,500 buses pass this place. The challenge in designing this new junction lay especially in creating clarity and safety for all users. In the new design, cars, buses, cyclists and pedestrians are clearly separated from each other.
