Vredenburg square
Developer: City of Utrecht
Status: Preliminary Design
Developer underground car park: Corio
The Vredenburg square owes its name to Vredenburg castle that Charles V built at this location in 1528. The castle was meant to control the Utrecht population, but was demolished by this same Utrecht population soon as fifty years later. From those days the Vredenburg square has, among other things, served as a location for the cattle market, the fair and as a parking lot. In the past few years the square has been used on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and market Sundays for the commodity market. The market will remain on the square both during and after the renovation.
The square will form the perfect link between the old city centre and the Station area. It will be an important meeting place for people that go shopping, go to a concert in the Music Palace or visit the market. All sides of the square will be used, which will give the square much more the nature of a city square. Underneath the Vredenburg square and the Catharijnesingel an underground parking lot will be built that can accommodate 1,500 vehicles.
